Concert of Europe

Definition

In the Concert of Europe that dominated the decades following the Congress of Vienna, the five most powerful states tried, with some success, to cooperate on major issues to prevent war- a possible precedent for today's UN Security Council. In this period Britain became a balancer, joining alliances against whatever state emerged as the most powerful in Europe.
