Conventions

Definition

Four conventions on human rights have been drawn up as legally binding treaties. These deal with genocide, racial discrimination, political rights, and economic and social rights, respectively. The treaties have been ratified only the genocide convention (and even that one only recently). The United States has ratified only the genocide convention. In addition to specific concerns about the terms or of other three treaties, the United States (along with many other states) has general concerns about the loss of sovereignty implicit in such treaties.
