Inter-Governmental Organizations

Definition

Intergovernmental organizations are organizations whose members are national governments. The UN and its agencies are IGOs. So are most of the world's economic coordinating institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. IGOs fulfill a variety of functions, and they vary in size from just a few states to virtually the whole UN membership. For example, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries seeks to coordinate the production and pricing policies of its twelve member states. The International Atomic Energy Agency seeks to regulate the flow of nuclear technology for poor states. The General Agreement on Tarrifs and Trade serves as a forum for negotiations on lowering trade barriers worldwide.
