Wilson's Conception of World Order

Definition

Woodrow Wilson (who came up with the idea for the League of Nations- the precursor to the UN), along with others such as Theodore Roosevelt can properly be called an "internationalist". He favored U.S. leadership and activism in world affairs. These views seem vindicated by the failure of isolationism to prevent World War II (or to allow the United States to stay out of it). In the post-Cold War era, U.S. internationalism is tempered by a new cost consciousness and a willingness to work through the UN to attain U.S. goals.
