It is very strongly recommended that students in this course get a special, reduced-rate subscription to the NEW YORK TIMES, or perhaps use the Web edition.   Daily hard copies of the paper for delivery to a lock box on campus can be ordered at greatly reduced rates on the subscription forms available from the main office of the Department of Political Science, 1246 Social Sciences.

Specific readings for each week's work will be assigned each week by e-mail.  General assignments are noted on the Course in Detail page of the course web.

WEEK ONE READING ASSIGNMENT

Please read the following in the text book over the weekend and in
preparation for our class discussions, next week:

1. Skim chapters 1 and 2.

2. Read carefully, as a follow up to Wednesday's lecture, chapter 6,
pages 310-349 (on Custom, General Principles, and Judicial Decisions).

3. Read carefully, chapter 6, pages 272-309 (on the Treaty-Making
Process) and chapter 5, pages 217-241 (on the United Nations and
Administering Treaties).

Links to the following research databases are maintained by the staff of Shields Library and are available only to faculty, students, and staff at UC Davis.

AgBiotechNet. Publishes current information about biotechnology and biosafety for researchers and policy makers world-wide. The site provides access to journal article abstracts, conference proceeding papers and tables of contents of current books. Updated monthly.

AccessUN.  [Choose from menu]. Indexes United Nations documents including Official Records, masthead documents, draft resolutions, meeting records, UN Sales Publications, and the UN Treaty Series citations. Also included is the full-text of several thousand UN documents.

Associations Unlimited.  Contains information for approximately 455,000 international and U.S. national, regional, state, and local nonprofit membership organizations in all fields, including IRS data on U.S. 501(c) nonprofit organizations. For some 2,600 major U.S. national associations, provides full-text association materials such as brochures, pamphlets, and membership application forms.

CQ Library.  Congressional Quarterly's web service provides access to the CQ Researcher, an invaluable source of background information and research summaries on topical issues (11/99-). CQ Library also includes CQ Weekly Report back to 1983. CQ Weekly reports impartially and in detail on Congressional activities and political developments.

Congressional Universe.  Congressional Information Service database provides access to congressional publications, including bills, hearing testimony, reports, prints, documents, as well as member information and legislative histories and bill status.

Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).  Country Profiles and Reports Objective and timely analysis and forecasts of the political, economic and business environment in more than 180 countries. Annual profiles are updated by quarterly reports. Dates covered: 1996-Present

Environmental Sciences & Pollution Management.  6,500 periodicals indexed. Database subfiles include: Agricultural & Environmental Biotechnology Abstracts, Ecology Abstracts, Digests of Environmental Impact Statements, Water Resources Abstracts, Pollution Abstracts, Toxicology Abstracts, and two internet monthly guides to web sites for specialized topics for Environment and Water issues.

Fish & Fisheries Worldwide.  Covers fish, fisheries and aquaculture, including biology, genetics, natural history, behavior, diseases, parasites, limnology and oceanography, habitat management, culture, propagation, fish processing, marketing, and fisheries management. 1960-

J Stor.  "JSTOR is a not-for-profit organization established with the assistance of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. It is dedicated to helping the scholarly community take advantage of advances in information technologies." JSTOR provides access to back files rather than recent issues of important scholarly journals and includes among its goals building a comprehensive archive that fills missing-issue gaps in the print collections of its subscribers.
